Even if you never read the book, you surely know the outline of Robinson Crusoe’s story.  The sole survivor of a catastrophic shipwreck, he found himself alone on a bleak island, within the reach of cannibals in canoes.  Relying on his ingenuity and discipline, he managed to supply himself with food, clothing, shelter and safety, self-sufficient until he spied a footprint in the sand that wasn’t his.  A native man he called Friday then became his sidekick and assistant until the stars lined up for Crusoe to return to civilization.
